Since March 24, 2025, new regulations governing the use of mobile devices imported into Kazakhstan from abroad have been in force. As a result, foreign nationals arriving in Kazakhstan may receive an SMS notification requesting them to verify the IMEI number of their mobile device.

What is an IMEI and why is verification required?

An IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a unique identification number assigned to every mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet.

IMEI verification is required to:
  • use SIM cards issued by Kazakhstani mobile operators without restrictions;
  • confirm the lawful import of your device into Kazakhstan;
  • avoid potential suspension of mobile network services for the device.

Who is required to complete IMEI verification?

IMEI verification is mandatory if a mobile device purchased abroad was imported into Kazakhstan for the first time on or after 24 March 2025.
